Your Borough Of Poole

Dorset Home Choice

Homechoice is our way of allocating council and housing association properties which have become available for let.

Poole are now working in partnership with five other local authorities across Dorset to bring you one website to view and express an interest in vacant properties advertised on a weekly basis and one application to join any of their registers. The partnership scheme is called Dorset Homechoice and the local authorities are Bournemouth, Poole, North Dorset, West Dorset, Purbeck, Weymouth & Portland and Christchurch & East Dorset.

If you are considering applying for the register for the first time, or need help with housing urgently, please call the Housing Advice Team on Tel. 01202 633804 to talk through your housing advice and options.

To apply online, click on this link to take you to the Dorset Homechoice website.

If you have any queries about our housing register that aren’t answered at dorsethomechoice.org please call us on 01202 633805.

Our phone lines are open 9am - 5pm Monday to Thursday, closing at 4.30pm on Fridays.

You can also email us with any queries you may have homechoice@poole.gov.uk

If you wish to submit information regarding any medical or welfare problems please use the Medical Form. This is available to download on the right, available to collect at the Civic Centre or to complete online via the Dorset Homechoice website.

If you are overcrowded or your privately rented property is in disrepair, please download the appropriate form on the right, complete it and return to us once you have applied.

If you are unable to access a computer in your local area, we have a computer available to use in the Civic Centre. You will be given instruction on using it to make your application.

Please contact us if you are unable to use the internet and do not have any friends, relatives or support workers who can help you with your application.

Applicants wanting to bid on properties of their choice  must ensure they are registered with the relevant local authority.

Once your application is assessed you will be able to view properties available and bid for them through the Dorset Homechoice website.

Direct lets to homeless applicants

Whilst the aim of Dorset Home Choice is to provide choice in the allocation of council and housing association homes in Poole, there will be a number of exceptional situations where this will not be possible.

Due to very high demand for accommodation for homeless families, a number of properties will be held back for homeless applicants in temporary accommodation, including bed and breakfast accommodation. This is to reduce the time families spend in this type of housing.

A proportion of properties will continue to be advertised to help those social housing tenants wishing to downsize and those households in Emergency band / Gold band for medical / welfare reasons.

At the same time, it is worth noting that the overall number of flats and houses available to let to families has gone down in recent months.

If you need further advice regarding your housing situation please contact the Housing Options Team for further advice on Tel. 01202 633804

Bidding for homes is changing

If you're registered on Dorset Homechoice, there are some important changes about bidding to be aware of.

We will be changing the frequency we advertise homes from a weekly cycle to advertising homes daily.

Although properties will be advertised daily you will not need to check each day - all adverts will be available to bid for on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The property advert will include the date that the advert will close so you will be able to see when you need to bid by. These changes will come into effect from 2nd January 2018. You can find out more information about the changes on the Dorset Homechoice website www.dorsethomechoice.org.uk.

If you need help with bidding you can ask a friend, family member or support worker to help you. Or you can contact us if you need help bidding or any other advice on 01202 633804.

With effect from the 1st of August 2015, any applicant being considered for an allocation of a property in the Borough of Poole through Dorset Homechoice will be required to provide the original and any updated versions of their supporting documentation for their application within 24 hours of being contacted.

Please note that failure to provide the original documentation within this timescale will result in the property being offered to someone else.
