Learn to use a computer

Computer Buddy drop-in sessions

If you just want drop in to talk to someone about your computer problems or need guidance how to learn on your own, we now have Computer Buddy Drop-in sessions at all of our libraries. This is ideal for you if you are just starting out using a computer, but need a bit of help.

One of our volunteers will either sit with you at one of our library public computers, or you can bring in your own laptop (or other device) and the volunteer will connect it to our free wi-fi internet. They will show you websites which have a number of free online tutorials to help you learn, or they will just answer your questions the best they can. You may need to explore solutions together!

Come and meet the Computer Buddies at these libraries:

  • Broadstone Library - Thursdays 12pm to 3pm

  • Branksome Library - Mondays 10:30am to 12:30pm and Wednesdays 2pm to 4pm

iPad and Android Demonstration Sessions

Have you got an iPad, iPhone or Android tablet and are now struggling to use it? Perhaps someone bought it for you with good intentions and you don't want to leave it gathering dust. Perhaps you are thinking of getting one and are just wondering what all the fuss is about, and why everyone seems to be using one.

Our 'Introduction to the iPad and Android Tablets' lasts 90 minutes and is totally free. It's open to all (not just library members) and is run by a well established local company, Happy Lappy Ltd.

We are currently organising sessions for the New Year.

Special equipment

Special keyboards are available for all class sessions, as well as a trackerball pointing device, and a large monitor. We also have an adjustable desk for wheelchair users at Poole Library. If you require any of these, please tell us when you book (please note - only one of each item available per session). Each venue is fitted with a hearing loop.

Other ways to learn

We recommend the guides on the Digital Unite website.

Learndirect has lots of IT courses, some of which are free. To find what you are looking for, just use the search facility on the site.

If you would rather go to lessons on a regular basis, check out what Skills and Learning have to offer. From basic computer skills, to shopping on Ebay, there's something for everyone.
