Dementia Awareness Week

Monday 21 to Saturday 26 May, all libraries

All Poole Libraries have collections of books for people with dementia, their carers, families and friends, and are aiming to be dementia-friendly spaces. Come and see us, join our social activities, and pick up a book whilst you're here.

Free live screenings from the Hay Festival

Saturday 26 May, Hamworthy Library and Kinson Hub

We're delighted to have teamed up with the Hay Festival to screen some of their live events through the day on Saturday 26 May. Booking is essential - please phone 01202 262449, email libraries@poole.gov.uk or ask in the libraries. Here is the programme for Hamworthy Library:

Half term fun for families

Monday 28 May to Saturday 2 June

We have lots of activities for families during the school holidays. Download our special leaflet for more details. Why not try making a jellyfish at Oakdale Library, planting some beans like Jack at Canford Heath Library, and finding out about Monkey World at Branksome Library. Or learn to identify birds at Parkstone, decorate some biscuits at Hamworthy or join the Famous Five at Broadstone.

Wriggle and rhyme/Rhymetime on the beach

Monday 4 June, 11-11.45am, Bournemouth Beach

Bring your baby for sun, sea, sand and songs. Dress in bright colours to dance the Bookstart Bird Boogie, and bring your own musical instruments to join in the fun. Meet beside the pier or in Pavilion Dance South West if wet.

Down and Out Live

Wednesday 6 June, 2-6pm, Poole Library

George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London read cover to cover, screened live from University College London by the Orwell Foundation.  Orwell's classic book on 1930s poverty  – alongside other work including his diaries, modern stories from the streets, discussions, and new poetic responses – will be brought to life in an immersive, multidisciplinary performance that asks searching questions about homelessness today.

Short Story reading with Dorset Blind Reading Group

Friday 8 June, 10.30am-12.30pm, Poole Library

Local author Pamela Fudge has worked with the Dorset Blind Reading Group to write a special short story for Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight. Come along for coffee and listen to the first live reading of the story, meet the Reading Group and have a chat.

Pop-up Reading Group: The Stepmothers' Support Group

Ancestry Sessions

Broadstone Library: 2nd Tuesday of month, 2pm to 4pm.

Discover your unique personal history using Ancestry Library Edition and with the help of our family history volunteer. You will need to bring your own laptop or tablet to take part in the session. Booking essential.

Coffee mornings/days

Colouring for Adults

Join our free colouring-in groups and colour yourself calm. We will provide tea, pencils and some very intricate designs to get to work on, or feel free to bring your own and enjoy the company.

Councillor surgeries


Try out a crossword, easy or fiendish, it's your choice. Make new friends as you puzzle together.

Dominoes clubs

If you like to play dominoes, come to one of our clubs and find some worthy competitors.

Dorset Adult Aspergers Support

Rossmore Library, 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, 11am to 1pm. 
Call in to ask for advice, meet others and share your stories, seek help and guidance.

ESOL Chat and Reading Group

Oakdale Library, 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, 1.30 - 2.30pm
Come and meet new friends and practice your English at our weekly group.

Film Night

Friday Film Night is monthly at Hamworthy Library and we have some great films lined up for you. It normally starts 7:00pm, doors open 6.30pm. Pay just £3.00 at the door. You can even bring your own refreshments. Tell your friends, but come prepared to make new ones! See the Hamworthy Film Night Facebook page for more information.

Games Club for adults

Scrabble or chess, backgammon or tiddlywinks? Which is your game of choice? Bring a friend or meet new ones as you play games in the library.

Health and fitness

  • 'Gentle Exercise Class' runs every Thursday at Hamworthy Library 11.30am - 12.20pm
  • Pilates class at Hamworthy Library 5:30-6:30 every Tuesday

  • Yoga: Hamworthy Library every Wednesday 7.15 - 8.45pm. £6 per session

  • Back Care Exercise Class at Hamworthy Library Tuesdays 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

  • Healthy Walks Group meet Wednesdays 10:30am at Rossmore Library. Walk around the Bourne Valley area, usually followed by tea and cake in the Hub Cafe.

Creekmoor Children's Centre Toy Library runs during normal Creekmoor opening hours. Borrowers must register with the Children's Centre and the Library. Membership is free.

Arts Award

Poole Libraries are Arts Award Supporters.

Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification that aims to help young peopled aged 7-25 to explore their creative skills and to develop as artists and arts leaders.

All Poole Libraries are Arts Award Supporters. We offer activities such as author/illustrator events, arts and cultural activities, the Summer Reading Challenge and we have lots of volunteering opportunities. You can count attendance or volunteering at any of our events for children and teens as part of your Arts Award. To find out more about Arts Award please visit the Arts Award website.
