Music And Mime For Babies And Toddlers

Poole Museum is launching its second singing and signing course for babies, toddlers and their parents at Upton Country Park.

The course will run in five week blocks beginning on Monday 25 February. During each hourly session, parents and their children will be able to learn some key signs to assist in early communication. Each week will take a different theme and by the end of the course parents will have built up a useful working vocabulary. The signs will be taught through simple well known nursery rhymes and songs.

The themes will cover people, feelings, food, places and animals. The children and their parents are able to learn some simple signs from a modified form of sign language called Sign Along. Babies are often able to learn and use signs before they are able to speak and so this helps them to communicate from an earlier age.

The course will be based in the Education Centre at Upton Country Park. On fine days the group can move outside to take advantage of the fantastic surroundings.

Councillor Judy Butt, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Public Engagement and Participation (with responsibility for Arts and Culture), Borough of Poole, said: "We are delighted that we can once again offer this exciting course for babies and toddlers. Music plays a pivotal part in a child’s development and these stimulating and enjoyable sessions for both child and parent can help build vital confidence, social and communication skills whilst being in a fun, relaxed and friendly environment."

The Upton Music and Mime sessions are open to children and their carers between the ages of 0-2 years old. The course will start on Monday 25 February and run every Monday for five weeks between 10 am and 11 am.  The cost is £20.00 per child for the whole course and booking is essential. Spaces are limited but the course will run again during the Summer Term.
