Extra Care Housing Project Wins £1.7m Funding

Borough of Poole and Poole Housing Partnership (PHP) have been awarded £1.7m of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to develop Extra Care Housing at PHP-managed Trinidad House, Rossmore Road.

The proposed scheme will be financed through the £1.7m of funding from government as well as a commitment of £5.5m capital funding from the borough's Housing Revenue Account.

There are currently 107 units of sheltered housing accommodation on the site. The proposed scheme would see a new three/four-storey building built with approximately 54 new units to create an extra care housing community of around 144 apartments.

The site is well located with bus stops directly opposite to allow people to easily make trips to Poole or Ashley Road. There is a strong community but a lack of a village centre. The new building would have a welcoming entrance and community hub with an easily accessible garden to help strengthen the community spirit.

Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Health and Well-being, Borough of Poole, said: "To be awarded this funding is fantastic and will allow the borough to build additional extra care housing in Poole. The current facility at Trinidad House is in need of refurbishment and providing a new community facility will allow us to accommodate more residents with different levels of need. We aim to help people maintain their independence in their own homes for as long as possible and I look forward to seeing this project develop."

Poole Housing Partnership are leading on engagement with residents and are holding meetings on site to discuss how the scheme will affect them individually. It is hoped that the proposals will develop over time following consultation with residents about how they would like their community hub to look and feel.

Cllr Graham Wilson, Ward Member for Newtown, Borough of Poole, said: "The proposed scheme has potential to be a wonderful community facility that could benefit all Newtown residents. This funding will allow vital improvement works to take place and I look forward to working with officers and members to take this project forward. It will be important to talk to the residents about what they want and allow them to help develop the proposals as this is an exciting opportunity for them."
