Momentum Cycle Challenge Gets Underway

Ashley Cross businesses show support for Momentum with Cllr Xena Dion

Workplaces across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch are taking part in a fun, free competition to encourage more people to ride bikes.

Poole Hospital, Lush Handmade Cosmetics, LV= and Sunseeker International are among 100 employers who are already competing in the ‘Momentum Cycle Challenge’ which started on 27 May.

More than 3000 people are expected to take part in the Challenge over the next three weeks between May 27 - 16 June. Unlike most cycling events, the Momentum Cycle Challenge isn’t about speed or distance, but is all about encouraging people to simply hop on a bike so that they can experience the benefits of riding first hand.

No matter the weather just get out and about on your bike for a short while and see how much fun cycling is, as local Ashley Cross businesses proved on Tuesday 28 May when they braved the rain to show their support for the Momentum Cycle Challenge.

Cllr Xena Dion, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, and a Prosperous and Sustainable Poole, Borough of Poole, said: "Cycling is a great way to improve fitness, reduce your carbon footprint and make the most of the fabulous scenery we have in Poole.

"I'm really pleased and encouraged by the fact so many local businesses have signed up to take part in this fun, free challenge and I hope people will see how much fun cycling is even for just a short time a day - there is a real sense of freedom in cycling - be it on the roads, cross country or along the many designated cycle trails we have locally."

Organisations are competing against those of a similar size for a fair chance of winning. There are six size categories: 500+ staff, 200-499 staff, 50-199 staff, 20-49 staff, 7-19 staff, 3-6 staff. The level of participation will count towards the organisation's score. It is all being calculated live on the Momentum Challenge website so that businesses will be able to see what position they are in.

People can cycle anywhere they like, anytime they like over the three week period.  The organisations that get the most staff riding for just 10 minutes or more will win prizes.

There is a great list of prizes including four new bikes, a Garmin Edge GPS cycle computer, two tickets for the Early Riser Cycling and Music Festival, a spa day for two at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel and Spa, and a one day kite surfing course for two people.

The winning organisation will win a fantastic prize that staff will be able to share amongst themselves.

If you'd like to learn more about cycling why not come along to Poole Park on 5 June between 10am-6pm to try-a-bike.
