0-5s Team Gain National Award for Working with Parents

Borough of Poole's 0-5s Team gained a Highly Commended in the ‘Working with Parents’ category at the prestigious Nursery World Awards 2013.

The team were runners up with their 'Starting Out, Together it's Child's Play' project which was developed by Jeanette Yorke, (Early Learning Advisory Teacher) and Karen Loftus, (Children’s Centre Manager East Cluster). Jeanette and Karen were delighted to represent the team and collect the award at the ceremony at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London.

Karen Loftus, Children's Centre Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "We are so proud of the success of ‘Starting Out’ and to come second in this category is a wonderful acknowledgment of the value of this project."

The award winning project aims to improve the home learning environment and to help children to become ready for school. It has been rolled out into Children’s Centres, several nurseries and schools in Poole.

Jeanette York, Project developer, Borough of Poole, said: "The project recognises that it is often a lack of knowledge that causes some parents the biggest challenge as they bring their children up. Sharing a basic knowledge of children's brain development with parents has had a huge impact on their motivation to engage with the scheme. Throughout the project, parents gain ideas on how to interact and communicate with their children."

Cllr Janet Walton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families, Borough of Poole, said: "We are very proud of the recognition that this project has received from such a prominent national publication. The 0-5s team are now working hard to get ‘Starting Out, Together it’s Child Play’ rolled out nationally, so that even more families can benefit."
