Poole Portage team Celebrates 4* Achievement

Borough of Poole's Portage Service is celebrating being awarded 4* by the National Portage Association.

The National Portage Association has recently introduced a system of rewarding registered Portage Services using stars to recognise the different levels of service provision across the UK. There are now four levels of registration, ranging between 2 – 5 stars.

Portage is a home visiting, education focused, programme for pre-school aged children with Special Educational Needs/Disabilities (SEN/D) and their families. The aim of portage is to support parents in helping their child learn and develop new skills through fun play activities in their familiar home environment.  Portage starts by looking at what activities the child enjoys and the skills they already have and then builds on this in small achievable steps.  Each small step helps the child to learn and succeed and make progress in their learning and development.

Registering Poole Portage as a 4* Portage Service acknowledges and rewards the hard work and dedication of the Portage team in delivering a high quality, specialist service to pre-school aged children with additional needs and their families.  It also recognises the Portage team’s continued commitment to their own professional development through access to further training and specialist workshops.  The team recently attended the National Portage Association Annual Conference in Northampton where they gained fabulous new ideas and ways of working and they are now enthusiastically putting these ideas into practice with Portage children and families in Poole.

Cllr Janet Walton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families, Borough of Poole, said: "I'm thrilled that our Portage team has been recognised for the fantastic work they do. I look forward to them putting the new ideas they have gained into practice."
