Your Borough Of Poole

Your Chance To Stand

Poole's young people are invited to attend this year's annual UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) election on Friday 7 February.

Any young person aged 11 – 18 who either lives in Poole or attends a Poole school can come along to the election at the Civic Centre between 5.45-9.15pm. The event will be opened by the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Philip Eades.

The young people attending will hear from Poole’s outgoing Member of the Youth Parliament(MYP) Jess Elms and Deputy Member of Youth Parliament Francesca Reed, who will outline the work they have been involved in throughout the year.

The UKYP member gets to work with a network of around 400 other MYP's to create a manifesto that is fed into Government nationally. Poole's MYP plays a vital role both locally and nationally. Locally, the MYP attends South West regional meetings, produces local priorities through consultation with fellow young people, and feeds in to the council's overview and scrutiny process for children's services. On a national level, they get to attend the annual sitting of the UKYP in the House of Commons where discussions are held about what prioirities young people feel are important to them.

Jess Elms, Outgoing MYP, said: "This year has honestly been the best year of my life, and I think it has completely transformed me as a person. UKYP has given me opportunities I would never have dreamt of, such as speaking in the House of Commons, running a workshop for teachers, attending the annual sitting. I have grown in confidence and passion and met new friends for life. UKYP really highlights the importance of youth democracy and getting young people's voices heard."
Following the presentations, young people will then be encouraged to come forward and stand for election and candidates will be supported by participation staff from the Open Access team in Children, Young People and Learning to deliver their election manifesto to the voters.

Borough of Poole’s Returning Officer will run the election. For more information please contact the Peter Cooper tel: 01202 262281
