Poole's popular and historic open space, Poole Park, is the subject of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid for £2.5 million.

To support the first stage of the bidding process, Borough of Poole and the Friends of Poole Park are asking local people to get involved and give their comments during six-weeks of public engagement, starting 26 January until 10 March.

The consultation will focus on five themes so there will be something for everyone to comment on. The themes are:

*  Lakes and park drainage
*  Renovate and restore heritage landscapes
*  Geese and wildfowl study
*  Traffic movements
*  Renovating play areas

The first free event to kick start the public engagement programme is 'Poole Park Life - An Introduction to the Consultation'. This will take place between 12 noon and 3pm on Sunday 26 January in the Pavilion. This will be the first opportunity for local people to complete a questionnaire, enjoy a guided walk of the park and look at the five themes the bid will focus on.

During the next six-weeks people can get involved by completing a questionnaire which is available on-line at www.boroughofpoole.com/pooleparklife. Alternatively paper copies are available in Poole libraries, the Civic Centre, the Boat Shed and The Ark in Poole Park and at the eight public engagement events.

Councillor Judy Butt, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Public Engagement and Participation, Borough of Poole, said: "Poole Park is a fabulous facility that offers something for everyone, whether it is walking, playing tennis, visiting the ice rink, enjoying the wildlife or just letting children play. So it's really important that we take advantage of this amazing opportunity to secure significant funds, that could help deliver a range of enhancements to the Park.

"We need volunteers and business people to help us with our bid, which is why we are providing a variety of ways for people to give their input. If we can clearly demonstrate that the proposals for the bid are fully supported by the Friends of Poole Park, stakeholders and, what's really important, the public at large then we have a better chance of getting this investment. So by getting involved and working together we can look after this important jewel in Poole's crown."

As the Heritage Lottery Fund is a two-stage bidding process, Borough of Poole and the Friends of Poole Park will be submitting its first bid in August 2014. Successful bids will be announced in December and it will take at least a year for the second stage bid to be prepared, with full funding hopefully following in 2016.
