Poole Museum Inspires Its Own Exhibition

An exciting new exhibition of art inspired by Poole Museum is due to be opened by the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Philip Eades, on 11 March.

POOLE OPEN 2014 is a new biannual arts competition which seeks to highlight the work of artists, designers and makers working in all media.

UK-based artists aged 16 years and over were asked to submit work that responded to any of the key themes of the collections in Poole Museum. Over 200 works were put forward to the selection panel, which included Alison Bevan, Director of the Royal West of England Academy. From this, works by 67 artists were chosen for the exhibition, which is on display at Poole Museum until 5 May.

Cllr Philip Eades, Mayor of Poole, said: "It is great that so many artists put forward work for this exhibition and I'm thrilled to have been asked to open it. I would encourage as many people as possible to visit the Museum before 5 May to see the wonderful displays for themselves."

POOLE OPEN 2014 is a collaboration between Borough of Poole’s Arts and Museum Services. The selected works will be on display across Poole Museum, both in the two galleries and amongst the permanent collections, with many of the works for sale. All the artists are eligible for four prizes, kindly provided by sponsors The National Trust, Poole Museum, Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Skills and Learning, and The Print Room.

Cllr Xena Dion, Portfolio Holder for Prosperous and Sustainable Poole, Borough of Poole, said: "It is fantastic how artists continue to be inspired by Poole. This new exhibition at Poole Museum brings a new interpretation on the town’s rich and varied history, as well as the opportunity to discover exciting new artists."

The Museum and the exhibitions are free. POOLE OPEN 2014 will be open to the public from 12 March. Opening hours until 6 April: Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm, Sunday 12 noon – 4pm (closed Monday). Museum opening hours from 7 April: Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday 12 noon – 5pm.
