Musical memories of World War One at Poole Museum this December

THE LOGBOAT SESSIONS, a successful acoustic music evening run by Borough of Poole Arts Service at Poole Museum is finishing its 2014 season with a very special show marking the centenary of the start of World War One.

Acclaimed electro-folk-storytelling trio Harp and a Monkey are bringing their new show ‘The Great War: New Songs & Stories’ to the Museum on Thursday 18 December.

Harp and a Monkey
The show is an exciting performance that includes both original songs and re-workings of traditional songs, as well as field recordings and anecdotes of people who lived through the war itself. The band will also perform songs from their existing and critically acclaimed canon.

Harp and a Monkey are in a unique position to deliver this performance as their singer, Martin Purdy, is an historian who has acted for many years as a World War One researcher and advisor for the BBC's ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ magazine, as well as being the co-author of the critically acclaimed World War One books Doing Our Bit and The Gallipoli Oak.

Harp and a Monkey have a fantastic rapport with audiences at live gigs. Memorably described as 'Elbow for seafarers and ramblers', the harp 'n' banjo driven electronica of the band is imbued with a deep Lancashire sensibility that shines through in their beautifully crafted and sometimes spooky vignettes of Northern life, love and remembrance.

Councillor Xena Dion, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for a Prosperous and Sustainable Poole, Borough of Poole, said: "It's a real coup to have the wonderfully talented Harp and a Monkey closing our LOGBOAT SESSIONS this year. Their new show will be both moving and inspirational and I would urge everyone to join us for a fantastic evening of folk music at its best."

THE LOGBOAT SESSIONS started in March 2014, bringing the best local and national talent to Poole Museum to perform next to the 2,300 year-old Poole Logboat. The evening has proved popular with audiences and musicians alike, with shows booked until the end of 2015. Guests for the new season include legendary American traditional performer Jeff Warner, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Duo 2014 winners Hannah Martin and Phillip Henry, and guitar super-trio The 3 Boxes who, between them have played with The Shadows, The Everly Brothers, Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens, Richard Thompson and Nanci Griffith!

Tickets for THE LOGBOAT SESSIONS with Harp and a Monkey are £6, available online via Eventbrite or through the Museum, either in person or by calling 01202 262600.
