Major improvements to shopping centre car park moving on at a pace

Major work to repair the Dolphin Shopping Centre’s Shoppers 1 roof-top car park is progressing well and the contractor is now moving to the next phase of the works.

The extensive improvements to the customer car park started in June and since then all main deck areas have been waterproofed and two main movement joints have been replaced. Work is continuing with the re-surfacing of the car park together with the installation of a new LED lighting system which will reduce energy consumption and provide more even lighting levels across the car park. The repair and refurbishment of the stairwells and parapets will complete the improvement works.

John Rice, Engineering Manager, Borough of Poole, said: “We are just over half way through this four month project and the works are on time and to budget. We have completed the main waterproofing works, which will reduce the risk of leaks into the shopping centre below and we are now concentrating on improving the environment for all car park users. We are aiming to re-open the car park in time for the busy shopping period leading up to Christmas.”

While these improvements are carried out, the car park will remain closed to all users. Access to Shoppers 2 car park will remain open for use as usual.

The work, costing £1.4 million, is being carried out by Raymond Brown Construction Ltd and it is anticipated that they will be completed by early October 2015.

Commenting on the repair work, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, John Grinnell added: “We are pleased that works are commencing on time and to schedule, with intention to re-open the car park ahead of a busy Christmas period.”

Ben Alford, Senior Project Manager for Raymond Brown Construction,  said: "We are well underway with the surfacing, having already completed approximately 25%, we are also currently cladding the perimeter walls and installing new wiring for the lighting columns. We hope that you haven’t experienced too much disruption so far and we will continue to carefully manage the works to minimise our impact.

"We would like to thank the children from Oakdale Junior School who have also been busy working with us to design posters, highlighting the importance of keeping safe near building sites. A selection of these fantastic posters are now displayed on our site establishment set up under the Towngate flyover.”

These improvements follow on from the major repairs carried out to the Shoppers 2 car park last year, as part of Borough of Poole's refurbishment strategy to improve the town's car park offer for customers.
