New app launched to help tackle noisy neighbours

A new app service will help residents tackle noisy neighbours by capturing and sending recordings of noise disturbances directly to Borough of Poole officers.

The easy to use and free app allows users to make short audio recordings of up to 30 seconds of noise on their Apple or Android smartphone and enter details about the nature of the disturbance, which then combine to make an electronic noise diary.

The Noise App

Using the GPS feature on smartphones, the app will also find the location of the noise, allowing the recording address to be validated for each report. The recordings and location data are then shared with the council to support noise complaints.

Cllr John Rampton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Consumer Protection, Borough of Poole, said: "We know that excessive noise can be a real issue for some of our residents. Whilst we would encourage people to politely approach neighbours to try and resolve problems in the first instance, the new noise app will give our officers extra assistance in investigating cases where a resolution has not been found.

“The data gathered by the app will allow our officer to decide on the next steps we are able to take, as well as providing users with regular update messages on the investigation."

If an initial approach to neighbours fails to resolve the issue, officers are on duty to respond to noise complaints during the day and from 8pm until 2am Monday to Saturday. The new app is intended to help cover noise that may occur outside of these times. Borough of Poole’s officers can be contacted on 01202 261700 during office hours or 0800 506050 outside of these times.
