Borough of Poole’s 0-5s services Children’s Centres team is celebrating after being invited to speak at a prestigious national conference.

The Capita Children’s Centres Conference will take place in London on 23 November, welcoming child development professionals from across the country. Borough of Poole was invited to speak after organisers were impressed with its work on home learning and school readiness through the award-winning Starting Out Programme. Child Development and School Readiness Lead Jeannette Yorke and Early Years Advisor for Schools Claire Harvey will now be sharing this knowledge and experience with others as part of the conference.

The Starting Out programme began in 2011, devised to help parents engage with their children and support their development. The scheme provides training workshops and specially-designed activity sacks for schools, nurseries, childminders and children’s centres.

Each activity sack has a different theme, from dancing to den building, and is designed to help children develop skills including communication and language. Parents are given information on child brain development and other child development topics and then borrow the activity sacks to use at home with their child.

Since the pilot scheme in 2011, the programme has been rolled out to over 900 children across Poole. Jeanette and Claire’s talk will focus on building partnerships with nurseries, pre-schools and primary schools to achieve positive outcomes for children, as well as working with parents to promote learning at home.

Jeannette commented: “We know that the Starting Out programme has been really beneficial to families and children in Poole, and it is a real honour to have this recognised and be invited to share our experiences with colleagues from across the country at the forthcoming conference.”

Cllr Mike White, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Capital Projects, Borough of Poole, said: “We are very proud of the team for the efforts they have made in establishing the Starting Out programme as an innovative and highly beneficial scheme. It is a reflection on their hard work and dedication that they have now been invited to share their knowledge, and I wish them the best for November’s conference.”
