Councils and bus operators 'Highly Commended' at National Transport Awards

The South East Dorset Quality Bus Partnership has just missed out on the top award in the 'Transport Partnership of the Year' category at the prestigious National Transport Awards

The partnership, comprising Poole, Bournemouth and Dorset councils, morebus and Yellow Buses has succeeded in generating the biggest growth in bus passengers in the country. In particular the number of passenger journeys in Bournemouth and Poole has risen by 74% and 72% respectively since 2004.

In an awards ceremony introduced by Patrick McLoughlin, Secretary of State for Transport, the South East Dorset partnership was beaten by an entry from West Yorkshire Combined Authority regarding the transport arrangements for the visit of the Tour de France in 2014.

The local transport authorities and bus companies work in partnership to support bus passengers and have a common aim to increase the number of journeys by bus.

Councillor Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: “To get this far in the National Transport Awards demonstrates the remarkable achievement of the Quality Bus Partnership. Increasing numbers of bus passengers in the conurbation are benefiting from significant investments made by the local authorities and bus companies in recent years to improve bus travel.”

Councillor Mike Greene, Cabinet Member for Transport at Bournemouth Council, said: “Being shortlisted in this category is great recognition for the work that has been done locally to enhance the infrastructure for buses. Through the work of Three Towns Travel we have been able to carry out a number of major improvements to make travelling by bus easier and more attractive.”

Andrew Smith, Managing Director of Yellow Buses, said: “It is pleasing to see national recognition of the work done to improve public transport in South East Dorset through partnership working.”

Andrew Wickham, managing director of morebus, added: “Morebus works closely with both the Borough of Poole and Bournemouth Borough Council, enabling us to provide a high quality service across the region.

“This strong partnership has supported our commercial bus network and created a competitive market which has grown over the years - resulting in the country’s highest level of passenger growth.

“The South East Dorset Quality Partnership is a real team effort. We are fortunate enough to be part of that group of experienced and highly skilled professionals. This recognition from these highly respected awards is just reward for the efforts of all those who work so hard to make travelling by bus a convenient and enjoyable experience here in the south.”
