New creative project supports people with dementia

People living with dementia and their close family members are invited to join a new free art project in Poole.

Mementos is an 8-week project organised by Borough of Poole Arts Service and Poole charity Prama. The project has employed professional textiles artist Seiwa Cunningham to work alongside people living with dementia and those who are closest to them, and to support them to make textiles art together.

Anna Shiels, Borough of Poole Arts Service, said: “The Mementos project will bring people together to enjoy reminiscence, creative activities and relaxing conversation. Working with textiles can be really beneficial for people with dementia as it is such a tactile experience. The sessions will be relaxed and informal so everyone can work at their own pace and focus on what people enjoy and can achieve together.”

Mementos will be supported by a small team of volunteers from Culture Volunteers Poole.

Councillor Mohan Iyengar, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Community Learning, Borough of Poole, said: “The numbers of people being diagnosed with dementia is increasing as are the range of services being provided to support them. Mementos is one of many creative activities provided by our Arts Service with a view to supporting the health and wellbeing of our residents.”

Mementos starts on 19 May for 8 weeks, from 10am to 12pm at the Communal Lounge, Cynthia Close, Poole. To book a free place, or to find out more about taking part in the Mementos project, either as a participant or as a volunteer, please contact Anna Shiels on 01202 633971 or email a.shiels@poole.gov.uk
