Planning approved for new 80-bed care home

Plans to build a new 80-bed care home in Canford Heath have been approved by councillors.

At a meeting held on Thursday 23 March members of Borough of Poole’s Planning Committee voted to grant an application made by Borough of Poole.

The proposals will see the construction of a new council-owned care home on Mitchell Road. The modern, spacious and energy-efficient home will provide specialist nursing and dementia care, operated independently under a contract specifically aimed at helping Poole residents who are unable to fully fund their own care needs.

Councillor Peter Pawlowski, Chairman of the Planning Committee, Borough of Poole, said: “There is a significant need for affordable Care Home provision in the area. The Committee unanimously approved the creative design which should provide excellent facilities for the residents.”

As well as plans being approved, a name has also now been selected for the new home – Figbury Lodge. The name has been chosen to reflect the history of the local area, with an 1811 map showing three hills dominating Canford Heath – Lodge Hill, Hakesbury Hill and Figbury Hill.

Councillor Karen Rampton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Services, Borough of Poole, said: "The approval of the planning application for Figbury Lodge is great news for the Council and for some of our most vulnerable residents. The new home will be able to provide the highest quality care in a modern, purpose built setting, as well as helping us to place local residents needing care closer to home.”

Councillor Sandra Moore, Ward Councillor for Canford Heath East, Borough of Poole, said: "There is a great need for affordable care homes in the local area, which the newly-named Figbury Lodge will go a long way to meeting, as well as creating job opportunities for local people during construction and afterwards in care roles.”

It is now hoped that building works will start in Autumn 2017 and take approximately 18 months to complete, with the new home opening for residents in Summer 2019.
