Your Borough Of Poole

Town Centre Heritage

The Old Town, High Street and Town Quay Conservation Areas (designated consecutively in 1974, 1986 and 1981) have been the subject of a review of Town Centre Heritage. A formal public consultation on the review began in 2011. Consultation with affected property owners ran from 19 December 2011  to 3 January 2012, and from 24 February to 23 March 2012. The appraisal recognises the value of Poole’s historic core to the social, cultural and economic vitality of the town in a Summary of Special Interest.

A key result of the review has been the consolidation of the three existing areas into one area and extensions to include the pedestrian railway bridge, the old lifting bridge, Hunger Hill open space as well as fragmented areas of townscape and isolated listed buildings on West Street, West Quay Road and a block east of Lagland Street. A map of the Town Centre Conservation Area is available to download here.

Current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats have also been identified as they need addressing to progress plans for the area. Overall there is a stated need to manage development and improvements in a way that capitalises on the unique architectural and historic character to create an attractive area that can meet retail and commercial demands and resident’s aspirations alike for a vital town centre.

Maps, within the reports, illustrate the town centre’s historic development, 8 study areas reviewed and new boundaries. Heritage buildings, landscaping, features of townscape value and intrusive features have been appended to Part 2 to serve as a quick reference tool for identifying noteworthy sites that add positively to the place or detract from it and need improving.

The adopted Part 1 and Part 2 are available below by clicking on the underlined live links:

A Part 3 Management Plan is underway to propose actions that may be taken to improve and enhance its historic character.
