Alder Road Resurfacing Scheme

In August 2017 the Department for Transport awarded us approximately £2.9M Challenge Fund for highways structural maintenance schemes to be carried out to some of our major roads. A key requirement was for this money to be spent by the end of March 2018. The Challenge Fund has enabled us to undertake far more work than we would otherwise be able to do.

The A3040 Alder Road was identified along with a number of other locations where a structural maintenance scheme was required especially because of the condition and age of the existing surface .

Description of the work

The scheme will consist of resurfacing the carriageway and will include the entire road except for two short sections located near Winston Avenue and Mossley Avenue which were treated last year. Some minor modifications to kerbs and bus stops will be made during the weeks leading up to the resurfacing. We have tried to schedule as much of this work as possible during the school half term holiday week however some delays travelling around this part of town have to be expected.

To ensure the work is done as quickly as possible two surfacing contractors are being employed and will work in different parts of the road at the same time. Whereas full details of the work are included on the attached plan at the link below key points are as follows:

Alder Road Resurfacing Plan

Works start Monday 12th February 2018.

Resurfacing Team 1 will start near Langside Avenue and head south towards Herbert Avenue using Stop Go traffic management. Operational hours are 7.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday. The resurfacing on this part of Alder Road is expected to be complete on Wednesday 21st February.

Resurfacing Team 2 will start work between Herbert Avenue and Yarmouth Road. This work will done using a temporary ROAD CLOSURE from 7am Monday 12th February to 5.30pm Friday 16th February. This work will include the installation of a new link between the two signal junctions as well as resurfacing the carriageway. During this time both signal junctions will be turned off. Both will be open for traffic to flow, except between Yarmouth Road and Herbert Avenue.

To help reduce delay the junction with Playfields Drive will be closed at this time.

At 7am Monday 19th February a SOUTHBOUND ROAD CLOSURE will be in place from Yarmouth Road to the roundabout with Ashley Road. We hope to complete this part of the work on Thursday 22nd February. Northbound access from Ashley Road towards Herbert Avenue is unaffected although there may be some delays. The junction of Yarmouth Road and Alder Road will remain open although it will not be possible to turn left from Yarmouth Road onto Alder Road and head towards Ashley Road & Pottery junction.

To help reduce delay the junctions with Recreation Road and Gwynne Road will be closed during this time.

For the duration of this scheme from the 12th to 22nd February 2018 the main diversion route for HGVs will be via Ringwood Road and Bournemouth Road. Local residents with direct access from Alder Road will receive written details concerning access shortly.
