What is a footway defect?

Footway defects may include:

  • potholes
  • flooding
  • ice
  • dangerous signing
  • missing or damaged inspection covers.

These may be caused by many things including normal wear and tear, particular problems (for example collapsed drainage pipes), vandalism or road traffic incidents.

In the case of vandalism or road traffic incidents, it is important, if possible, to report as much information, (e.g. vehicle registration number), so we can recover the full cost of repairs to the highway.

Highway inspections

Highway Inspectors carry out routine inspections of the highway network (every 1–12 months) and identify defects. The frequency of inspections is dependent on the importance and usage of the highway and the response time for remedying defects is dependent on the potential safety implication. Safety hazards will always be dealt with quickly (within 24 hours).
